AI assistants are priced in four main ways. Which one is cheaper depends almost entirely on how much you use the product, and how steady that use is. This guide explains each model, then works through real break-even points from vendors' published prices. For spiky use, [OpenAssistant](https://openassistant.us/?utm_source=aiassistantpricing\&utm_medium=content\&utm_campaign=usage-based-vs-flat-rate-ai-pricing) is our recommendation: it has a free Starter plan to measure your usage, one price per credit at every tier, and top-ups that never expire.

## The four pricing models

| Model | How it works | Examples (from vendor pages) |
| -------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Flat seat** | One price per person per month. Usage limits exist but are not metered in dollars | [ChatGPT Plus](https://chatgpt.com/pricing) ($20), [Claude Pro](https://claude.com/pricing) ($20), [Fathom Premium](https://www.fathom.ai/pricing) ($20 per user) |
| **Flat seat with usage windows** | Flat price, but usage resets on a timer. Hit the cap and you wait or upgrade | [Claude](https://claude.com/pricing): limits reset every 5 hours, plus weekly limits on paid plans. [The X Subscription](https://x.ai/pricing): a usage pool that refreshes weekly |
| **Credit bundle** | A monthly allowance of credits. Run out and you buy more, pay overage, or wait | [Town](https://www.town.com/pricing), [OpenAssistant](https://openassistant.us/pricing), [Lindy](https://www.lindy.ai/pricing), [Motion](https://www.usemotion.com/pricing), [Howie](https://www.howie.com/#pricing) |
| **Pure usage** | You pay per unit (minute, token) with little or no base fee | Voice platforms such as [Bland](https://www.bland.ai/pricing) ($0.14 a minute on Start); [Claude Enterprise](https://claude.com/pricing) charges usage at API rates on top of a $20 seat |

> **Lindy pricing check:** The [pricing page](https://www.lindy.ai/pricing) shows a $49.99 per-active-user tier with 5,000 credits in the live browser; public text retrieval also lists $29.99 for 3,000 credits. Confirm available tiers at signup. Cost examples retain their stated credit bundle.

## When flat-rate is cheaper

Flat pricing wins when you are a **heavy, steady user**. Your cost per task falls the more you use it, and you never get a surprise bill.

It loses when you barely use the product. A $20 plan used for five tasks a month costs $4 a task.

## When usage-based is cheaper

Usage pricing wins when your use is **light or spiky**: a busy month, then a quiet one. You pay for what you used.

It loses when usage climbs and you are not watching. That is why the details below matter: overage rates, caps, and whether bigger plans give you a better rate.

## Break-even 1: Town Pro with overage vs upgrading to Power

Town includes 5,000 credits on Pro and 12,000 on Power, and bills overage per credit once you pass your allowance ([town.com/pricing](https://www.town.com/pricing)).

| | Pro | Power |
| -------------------------- | ------ | ------ |
| Monthly billing | $59 | $119 |
| Yearly billing (per month) | $49 | $99 |
| Credits included | 5,000 | 12,000 |
| Overage per credit | $0.044 | $0.038 |

**Monthly billing.** Power costs $60 more ($119 minus $59). At $0.044 a credit, $60 buys 1,364 overage credits ($60 ÷ $0.044 = 1,363.6). So:

- Under about **6,364 credits a month**, Pro plus overage is cheaper.
- Over that, Power is cheaper, and it still has room up to 12,000.

**Yearly billing.** The gap is $50 ($99 minus $49). $50 ÷ $0.044 = 1,136 credits. Break-even is about **6,136 credits a month**.

**Power vs Power Plus (monthly).** $239 minus $119 = $120. $120 ÷ $0.038 = 3,158 overage credits on Power. Break-even is about **15,158 credits a month**.

One catch: Town's overage cap starts at $0, so overage is off until you raise it. If you leave it at $0, no overage is billed.

## Break-even 2: Lindy credit tiers vs top-ups

Lindy sells Team plans by credit tier and lets you top up at $10 per 1,000 credits ([lindy.ai/pricing](https://www.lindy.ai/pricing)).

| Tier | Price | Price per 1,000 credits |
| -------------- | ------------- | ----------------------- |
| 5,000 credits | $49.99 | $10.00 |
| 8,000 credits | $79.99 | $10.00 |
| 15,000 credits | $99.99 | $6.67 |
| 20,000 credits | $149.99 | $7.50 |
| 35,000 credits | $199.99 | $5.71 |
| 45,000 credits | $299.99 | $6.67 |
| Top-up | $10 per 1,000 | $10.00 |

Starting on the 5,000 tier and topping up, your cost is $49.99 + $10 for every 1,000 extra credits. That reaches $99.99 at 10,000 credits ($49.99 + 5 × $10). So **above 10,000 credits a month, the 15,000 tier is cheaper** than topping up, and it gives you 5,000 more credits for the same money. Note that Lindy's per-credit price does not fall steadily with size: the 20,000 tier costs more per credit than the 15,000 tier, and the 35,000 tier is the cheapest per credit of those shown.

## Break-even 3: OpenAssistant credit tiers (ours)

OpenAssistant's Pro credit tiers scale in a straight line: 5,000 credits for $72 per user per month, 10,000 for $144, and so on up to 100,000 for $1,440 on monthly billing ([openassistant.us/pricing](https://openassistant.us/pricing)). Every tier works out to $0.0144 a credit monthly, or $0.012 billed yearly.

- **Good:** no penalty for starting small. You never overpay per credit by picking a lower tier.
- **Less good:** no volume discount. Town's and Lindy's bigger plans lower the price per credit; OpenAssistant's do not.
- **Top-ups** start at $15. The pricing page does not say how many credits $15 buys, so we cannot compare top-ups with tiers yet.

On volume pricing alone, Lindy's larger tiers are cheaper per credit than OpenAssistant's. Credits are not the same unit across vendors, though, so per-credit price is only half the comparison.

## Break-even 4: pay-per-minute calling vs a platform fee

Bland charges $0.14 a minute on Start with no platform fee, or $0.12 a minute on Build for $299 a month ([bland.ai/pricing](https://www.bland.ai/pricing)).

Build saves $0.02 a minute. $299 ÷ $0.02 = **14,950 minutes a month** before Build pays for itself. Below that, stay on Start, unless you hit Start's limits first: 100 calls a day, 100 an hour and 10 at once.

## Seat plus usage: Claude Enterprise

Claude Enterprise is $20 per seat per month, billed yearly, with a 20-seat minimum, plus usage billed at API rates ([claude.com/pricing](https://claude.com/pricing)). Claude Team is a flat $25 per Standard seat on monthly billing ($20 yearly). On yearly billing, Enterprise costs more than Team as soon as anyone uses it, because the seat price is the same as Team's yearly price and usage is extra. You pay that for the admin and compliance features (SCIM, audit logs, custom retention). Your usage bill depends on your models and tasks, so we cannot give a single break-even number.

| Steady and heavy, one main tool | Flat seat | Lowest cost per task, no surprises |
| Spiky month to month | Credit bundle sized to your quiet months, plus top-ups or overage. [OpenAssistant](https://openassistant.us/?utm_source=aiassistantpricing\&utm_medium=content\&utm_campaign=usage-based-vs-flat-rate-ai-pricing) is our recommendation: the same price per credit at every tier, and purchased top-ups never expire | You pay extra only in busy months |
| Growing every month | The next credit tier up, once you pass the break-even above | Bigger tiers often carry a lower rate |
| Large, automated volume (calls, API) | Pure usage or a platform plan | Unit prices fall with volume |

## Three questions to ask any vendor

1. What happens when I run out: does it stop, wait, or bill overage?
2. Is there a spending cap, and what is the default?
3. Do unused credits roll over? (OpenAssistant: plan credits do not roll over, purchased credits do not expire. Lindy: monthly credits do not roll over.)

## FAQ

### Is usage-based or flat-rate AI pricing cheaper?

Flat-rate wins if you are a heavy, steady user, because cost per task falls the more you use it. Usage-based wins if your use is light or spiky, because you pay for what you used.

### What are the main AI pricing models?

Flat seat, flat seat with usage windows (Claude, The X Subscription), credit bundles (Town, OpenAssistant, Lindy, Howie) and pure usage (voice platforms like Bland).

### Do unused AI credits roll over?

Not on most plans. OpenAssistant's plan credits do not roll over, but credits you buy separately do not expire. Lindy's monthly credits do not roll over, and its top-ups are kept until used.

### When is Town Power cheaper than Town Pro with overage?

On monthly billing, above about 6,364 credits a month. On yearly billing, above about 6,136.

### Does OpenAssistant give a volume discount on credits?

No. Every Pro tier works out to $0.0144 a credit monthly ($0.012 yearly), so you never overpay per credit by starting small. Lindy's larger tiers are cheaper per credit.
